80:20 Rule from Management Gurus

"Together, the 20 gateway countries — 10 from the industrialized world and 10 from emerging markets — account for about 80 percent of the world’s economic activity, and 70 percent of its 6.6 billion inhabitants. An MNC could most effectively expand its operations around the world by making it a priority to set up hubs in these gateway nations. The hubs would have authority over most of the managerial elements of business: supply chain management, product development practices, product launches, marketing, branding, acquisitions, and recruitment of talent. The leaders of the hubs would then report directly to the office of the CEO, meeting regularly as part of the most senior executive team."

Innovation: The 'Pixar' Bird Way

“The only thing we’re afraid of is complacency—feeling like we have it all figured out. We want you to come shake things up. We will give you a good argument if we think what you’re doing doesn’t make sense, but if you can convince us, we’ll do things a different way.” ... “Go ahead, mess with our heads, shake it up”

10,000 Women... not 10,000 B.C

Launched by Goldman Sachs, 10,000 Women is a global initiative that will:

* Increase the number of underserved women receiving a business and management education

* Improve the quality and capacity of business and management education around the world

Abstract from FT article

The genesis for the effort, according to Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman chief executive, was research conducted by the bank’s employees indicating that boosting business education of women in developing countries could have a powerful multiplier effect on overall health levels and economic growth rates.

The research showed that closing the gender gap in employment in key emerging markets could lift per capita income 10-14 per cent above baseline forecasts by 2020.

It also indicated that higher levels of female education could have raised gross domestic product growth rates in emerging markets by 0.2 per cent over the past 10 years.

Blue Ocean Strategy

“Strategy thus becomes a question of outpacing rivals to gain a greater share from a limited economic pie,” Mauborgne says. “But when we look at industry who do we admire most? Those who outpace rivals? Yes, we admire winners. But more so, we admire people who create new paradigms, businesses and market spaces. These are what expand the pie of intellectual and creative wealth. In other words, creating a non-zero sum game.” This shift from win-lose to a win-win is the essence of Kim and Mauborgne’s Blue Ocean strategy.

CRY’s Girl Child Rights Charter.

Missing & Never Found: The Girl Child
Have you seen her anywhere?

Most probably not. And that’s not surprising. Because 6.65 million girls are “missing” in India. Being denied the right to life, millions die before they are even born. Of those that are born, 1 million don’t see their 1st birthday. Even those that survive are deprived of basic nourishment, education & protection.

It is time we stood up and demanded justice. We are doing a special campaign to enlist support for India's girl children. If you feel as we do, sign the CRY’s Girl Child Rights Charter. With 10,000 citizen signatures we’ll take this to the Ministry of Women and Child Development for accountability and change. Every signature counts, so sign the charter now.

Insights from the C.K. Prahalad's BOP

"According to the United Nations, the richest 20 percent in the world accounted for about 70 percent of total income in 1960. In 2000, that figure reached 85 percent. Over the same period, the fraction of income accruing to the poorest 20 percent in the world fell from 2.3 percent to 1.1 percent..."

"Fortunately, the Tier 4 market is wide open for technological innovation. Among the many possibilities for innovation, MNCs can be leaders in leapfrogging to products that don’t repeat the environmental mistakes of developed countries over the last 50 years. Today’s MNCs evolved in an era of abundant natural resources and thus tended to make products and services that were resource-intensive and excessively polluting. The United States’ 270 million people — only about 4 percent of the world’s population — consume more than 25 percent of the planet’s energy resources. To re-create those types of consumption patterns in developing countries would be disastrous."
